Foot & Ankle Pain

Foot & Ankle Pain

Foot and ankle pain can affect people of all ages and may develop suddenly or gradually. Because the feet and ankles contain numerous bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, pain can have many different causes.Common causes can include overuse, structural or biomechanical problems, tendon and ligament conditions, nerve-related pain, improper footwear, arthritis, and previous injuries. Symptoms may occur in the heel, arch, ball of the foot, toes, ankle, or other areas and may be accompanied by swelling, stiffness, numbness, or difficulty walking.Persistent or recurring pain should be evaluated rather than simply managed around, particularly when it begins to interfere with normal activity.

Treatment for Foot & Ankle Pain

Treatment begins with determining what is causing the pain. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include:
  • Footwear modifications
  • Orthotics or supportive devices
  • Activity modification
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Bracing or immobilization when appropriate
  • Treatments to reduce pain and inflammation
  • Diagnostic imaging when necessary
  • Surgical evaluation for conditions that do not respond to conservative treatment
The goal is not simply to manage symptoms, but to identify and address the underlying cause whenever possible.
