When the temperature climbs to near 90 degrees and the humidity is high, it is important to take logical steps to prevent heat related health issues. Dehydration is a major risk. Many people are walking around everyday in a mildly dehydrated state. The old adage of drinking 8 cups of water may be more than some need, but is a good rule of thumb. In the hot weather we lose water to perspiration as the body attempts to cool down. It is important to increase liquid intake. This does not include high caffeine or alcohol drinks. Avoid strenuous exercise and seek shade or air conditioning when possible. Be aware of changes in your mental state such as dizziness or fatigue. Severe dehydration and heat stroke are life threatening conditions. Keep an eye out for others who may be overheating. As I podiatrist, my foot advice is to wear shoes that breath well or sandals. Good socks are also helpful while in closed shoes. Let your feet “air out” when possible. Good luck and hopefully the weather will improve next week.
