Plantar Fasciitis is a painful condition that affects the heel and/or arches. It is an inflammation of the tight cord (plantar fascia) that supports the arch of the foot. This is a condition that is extremely common in our society because we generally are walking in shoes that are not supportive enough and on hard surfaces which we are not meant to be on. The problem usually develops over time due to the arch flattening beyond normal on ambulation. Many athletes develop plantar fasciitis such as Eli Manning of the New York Giants and Jason Giambi formally of the New York Yankees. However, this condition can be present in people of all ages and all activity levels.
The condition usually presents with pain in the heel and/or arch worse when the person first steps down on the foot after rest. The symptoms will then ease up for awhile and increase again on extended activity. East Avenue Podiatry utilizes a diagnostic ultrasound test to properly make the diagnosis and assess the extend of the injury.
Prevention includes wearing supportive shoes. Stretching the calf muscles is also helpful. I would suggest when starting an exercise program to progress gradually. It is also a good idea to cycle exercises. For example, run one day and bike the next. Taking days off is also key.

We also provide our patients with night splints that are very helpful in stretching the calf muscle. Over the counter and custom made orthotics can be crucial for long term relief. We also suggest icing the area for 15 minutes after activity and before bed.
